[ILL-L] Dissertations...to catalog or not to catalog WITH QUESTION

We catalog all dissertations. If it is an NSU dissertation we have 2
copies. One in archives that does not circulate and one in the main
collection that circulates. Works great for ILL.

Oh shucks! I'm glad to be a part of the ILL community.

I'm wondering if some other libraries have similar issues with
convincing their library staff that they should keep and catalog
dissertations. I honestly think that sometimes they forget about ILL,
because they are so (understandably) focused on their own students. Its
easy to forget that a dissertation purchased for one student may not be
used for their own students that often, but will probably be useful for
hundreds of other libraries!. Of course listing them on Share ILL is
more work for the ILL staff but at least its SOMEthing to start with.
For me, it'll be fuel for change.

Holly, for someone who just joined the ILL world a few months ago, you
are doing a great job! Cheers to a new member of our force!

Sincerely,
Sue

QUESTION

I could check about our webpage, and several people have mentioned Share
ILL. I'm new to ILL (just a few months!) so I will have to figure this
out (unless someone can help me), but yes, I will do whatever seems
best!

Alexandrea at NYPL suggested that if I can load it to Share ILL (which I
just joined yesterday!) I could leave space so others can add to the
list, and also add their symbols by which Dissertations they loan. I
think this is a great idea! What do you all think of that?

We are going to have to shut ourselves off for about a week this month
b/c we are expanding our library and are moving over to a new section of
the library so they can demo our old offices, but I hope to get this all
completed and up by mid March.

Instead of mailing copies to individuals, perhaps you could just post
the list on your webpage?

QUESTION

This morning as I was having coffee, I had an idea about this whole
dissertation thing.

I was thinking that since I KNOW we won't be cataloging the
dissertations anytime soon due to short staffing in tech services, and
while we have a bunch of them, not a HUGE amount, it would not take that
much effort to at least make a list in a spreadsheet of the ones we do
have. I know its a pain, but then if you needed a dissertation, you
could check that list and email us if you wanted to borrow it?

That would help me go to my supervisors in a bit and say "Hey look, I've
been lending these for X months and X many have gone out. We should
catalog them!"

If I produced such a list, would anyone like a copy?

Holly

dissertations for students?
We try to borrow them first, but many times universities do not allow so
we will order for faculty members or graduate students.

After you buy the dissertations, do you catalog them or simply give them
to the students?
Since we are a small library with a decent ILL budget, my supervisor
likes us to give the dissertations to the students, not asking for them
back.
We have really just implemented this in the past few months, though the
old coordintor (I am new) had been saving them for years.
We lack the space for cataloging them, though we could keep them in the
ILL office. If we did that, our office is generally closed by 3:30 and
not on weekends, so it would be a hassle for reference staff to get them
when we are closed. Also, it seems that we never order the same
dissertation twice, so the liklihood of them being used again is low.
However, some people feel differently. I have mixed feelings. We are
in the process of moving and I'm wondering if we should get rid of our
"secret stash" or hold onto them.
Knowing what other libraries do would be so helpful!

Thanks!
