[ILL-L] Needed: Justifications for

If the Admin feels that libraries are obsolete due to the internet, google etc. you might want to point out that searches for legitimate information on research topics most often lead to CITATIONS for the desired materials and not the actual materials themselves. This phenomenon actually results in more need for Interlibrary loans, not less. (ie acquiring access to those materials). At least, I hope I'm right about that. :-) Are there studies available out there to back up my speculation?
Jennifer

Good morning Phyllis-
This is the first part of our ILL policy at Pierce College.
"The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) department provides quality service to meet informational needs of users, when local resources do not meet those needs. This is done by requesting material from or supplying material to another library."
Hope this helps.

Hey Jane,
Thanks so much. I could use your second paragraph verbatim & just add student research as well.
So far you're my only respondent; perhaps I should directly email some individuals who are good at this.
Have an excellent weekend,
Phyllis

Hi Phyllis,
Just off the top of my head, what about all the money the college saves making loans and articles available to faculty, staff, and students at Ft. Lewis College without spending any money to purchase those same books, journals, and databases? Especially since you can get so much for free from all the great libraries in Colorado? ;-) There are some figures floating out there about how much it costs to do ILL per loan, per article, etc., and I bet that even if you added up all the costs of providing ILL, it would come out as way less than it would cost to purchase those same materials.
One library can't be all things to all researchers. A strong Interlibrary Loan department can be a life saver for those faculty whose research interests are not supported by the regular acquisitions budgets.
Just my one cent's worth on a Friday afternoon!

Greetings great folks,
Our director wants to present a proposal to the Administration to reinstate a position in Cataloguing/Tech Svcs & to request a new ½ time position for Interlibrary Loan - YES!!! She is asking the staff to offer input wrt the proposal's language, specifically "If anyone would like to provide specific wording making the case relating positions to student and classroom faculty recruitment and retention, it would be very helpful".
For too many years with too little money, the College's policy has been to create positions or fill vacancies only if they fell within those very specific areas. We have also dropped from 2nd to 10th on the list for capital improvements when funds become available. And then we must contend with the myth that libraries are becoming obsolete, especially since it isn't the majority of our students who believe it, but rather those Admin. folk.
I know why ILL is important, but I'm constantly amazed at how many members of our campus community are unaware of its existence! I can also defend the Library as 'center of learning and research' position. I'm just looking for some truly gripping and impressively-expressed rationales. If anyone is feeling creative or has a document stashed for such purposes, I'd be ever-so appreciative of your sharing your valuable resource(s).
It's Friday, a day I either work very late trying to catch up or I focus on certain 'challenges'. I hope many of you are in the latter mode today.
Thanks in advance,
Phyllis
