[ILL-L] Entering library code multiple times ~ ?

We're an EMST (Enter my symbol twice) library. We ask for it to give us
time to get books from our branches. In theory, we have 3 days with us
only once in the queue. In practice, if a request comes to us at 11:59
PM one day and we search it the next morning- we only have 2 days to
fill the request since - to the OCLC computer- that one minute equaled
one day. If the book is available here at Main, that's no problem. BUT
we can't get the materials from a branch to Main that quickly. So, we
ask that you put our symbol in twice so your customers will have the
best chance to get the material from us- whether it's at a branch or
here at Main. Most of the time, we don't need the full time to fill
your request and we give a very generous (60 day) loan period, to boot.
Direct Request protocols don't support EMST; so we conditional the
request where we're only listed once in the Lenders' String to let you
know to check back with us when you re-request it-entering our symbol
twice, of course- and we'll try to fill the request for you. So-
speaking for us and a few more libraries I know of- it's a matter of
logistics not a desire on our part to keep our materials as close to our
side as possible before letting them go off into a cold cruel world.
Our books are adventurous; they're used to travelling to the Snow
Country in the bleak mid-winter.
There are a lot of different types of EMST -for want of a better term-
protocols. Some ask for 3 days to fill a photocopy request but aren't
EMST as far as loans go. Some- like DLC- ask you to fill the string
with their symbol; I am not sure why they ask for all 15 days (or 14
popped into DLC's queue after DLC's ILL office had closed for the day).
I can only give you guesses (some quite entertaining) for why they
require a whole string of their symbol. But, this is their material to
loan and they can call the shots as to under what conditions they'll
loan it. They're well within their rights as the owning library.

Please forgive me if I missed an explanation for the query raised by Mr.
Peterson (below) about libraries asking that their codes be entered more
than once. We've run into it with a couple libraries this week (Lib of
Congress, for example, asks that you enter them 5x; a local library
wants to always be in there twice) and we in the back room here are now
wasting our time on idle speculation. It is rampant idle speculation at
that. I've searched the list archives with no luck.

Subject: [ILL-L] HCO--enter our library 5 times--sound familiar
Anyone else had this happen to you? I requested a 2006 book
(relatively new) from HCO (Hennepin Co--Minn) they requested that I
resubmit the request in OCLC with HCO entered five times. Checking
their policies they routinely request that you put HCO in twice. My
only theory is that entering our library five times for a new book is a
way to give their patrons maximum access to the book before they
surrender it up to an ILL request.
Always something new---that's a good thing right?
