[ILL-L] Epub ahead of print

Hi, Tim,

We get occasional ILL requests for epub or "in press" articles. The cites are usually from the journal's website or a service such as ScienceDirect. If they are doing subject searches, the citation will come up. It may also have been mentioned in other professional resources. The articles are usually only available for purchase online. If you want to go the traditional ILL route and get a free copy from a library, you have to wait for the article to actually appear in the journal, which can sometimes be months later. We ask our patrons if they need the article right away or if they can wait, and fill the request accordingly.

Subject: [ILL-L] Epub ahead of print

Hi,

I teach some resource sharing classes for Amigos Library Services. The
following question came up in a recent session and I don't know the
answer:

The ILL person got a citation that read

Age and ageing

2008 Nov 13; [Epub ahead of print]

Poor vision accompanied with other sensory impairment

Kulmala J;Viljanen A;Sipila S;Pajala S;Parssinen O;Kauppin

The ILL person was wondering about the "epub ahead of print" notation.
What does that mean? Is it simply saying it will be published in an
electronic version of the journal before appearing in a print version?
How would the user get hold of a cite for something that hasn't been
published yet.

Seems simple but cryptic at the same time!

Thanks,

Tim
