I found several citations like this in Medline and PubMed.

I've been told (but have no direct knowledge of this) that

sometimes the articles may never be published.

These are journal articles that may or may not eventually appear in
either the print or electronic editions of the journal. They are
generally available for download from the publisher for a fee if you
register for an account with them, or you may have access to them if you
hold either a personal or an institutional subscription to the journal.
Often times I find I can get them from a commercial document supply
source like the British Library. For a few of the more frequently used
journals here at our university I've actually registered for an account
with the publisher, and am able to download these ahead-of-print
articles by submitting our library credit card info. We don't need them
often enough to justify a full subscription, so the "as needed" purchase
option works pretty well for us.

Hi,

I teach some resource sharing classes for Amigos Library Services. The
following question came up in a recent session and I don't know the
answer:

The ILL person got a citation that read

Age and ageing

2008 Nov 13; [Epub ahead of print]

Poor vision accompanied with other sensory impairment

Kulmala J;Viljanen A;Sipila S;Pajala S;Parssinen O;Kauppin

The ILL person was wondering about the "epub ahead of print" notation.
What does that mean? Is it simply saying it will be published in an
electronic version of the journal before appearing in a print version?
How would the user get hold of a cite for something that hasn't been
published yet.

Seems simple but cryptic at the same time!

Thanks,

Tim
