[ILL-L] Epub ahead of print

Hi Tim,
It can refer to being published in the electronic version of the journal prior to the paper version being published, or it can refer to being published on line prior to the issue of the journal having been published in any format. I would imagine that where a volume and issue is missing from the citation then the article is being published in advance of the journal issue being published in any format. More journals seem to be doing this. While most journals include these advance publication articles in their subscription, there is one famous journal published by the AAAS that requires an extra subscription to be able to access these articles.
I gather the patron would have found the citation simply by searching the journal website - or more likely by using Google.
Best regards,
Don

Subject: [ILL-L] Epub ahead of print

Hi,

I teach some resource sharing classes for Amigos Library Services. The following question came up in a recent session and I don’t know the answer:

The ILL person got a citation that read

Age and ageing

2008 Nov 13; [Epub ahead of print]

Poor vision accompanied with other sensory impairment

Kulmala J;Viljanen A;Sipila S;Pajala S;Parssinen O;Kauppin

The ILL person was wondering about the “epub ahead of print” notation. What does that mean? Is it simply saying it will be published in an electronic version of the journal before appearing in a print version? How would the user get hold of a cite for something that hasn’t been published yet.

Seems simple but cryptic at the same time!

Thanks,

Tim
