[ILL-L] refunds for lost items returned - time limit

Hi Nora,

We have a one year cut-off period. We publicize this on the invoices we send to students and faculty who are being billed. We haven’t really encountered this problem with interlibrary loan, but we would have the same one year cut-off. I don’t believe we have this information listed in our policy directory on WRS, but as I said, it hasn’t been a problem yet. I hope it stays that way!

We have our fines and lost procedures published on our circulation rules page of our website, but we don’t list the specific 1 year cut-off. I believe the thinking behind not specifically putting that information out there was that students might just keep items for a long time if they knew they would be refunded by bringing it back within a year. For that reason, we also increased our “processing fees” (aka SCARE tactics) to $50 per item billed. This amount is nonrefundable, and when students realize they are about to be billed this fee per item on top of overdue charges and item replacement fees, it no longer seems worth it to them to keep an item for an entire semester or year and the item generally comes back within a day or two of the student receiving the notice that they are about to be billed.

Subject: [ILL-L] refunds for lost items returned - time limit

Dear Colleagues,

Do your libraries have a cut off period after which you will not refund the replacement costs for a lost item that has been returned? If so, how long is this period? Is the period the same for items lost in interlibrary loan? Is this information published in your circulation and interlending policies?

Thanks so much for any and all replies.

Nora
