[ILL-L] Setting up Reciprocal Agreements

We're in a smilar situation. When I first came here I tried to set up reciprocal agreements with several libraries (I just sent a form letter, plugging in the names, and included a stamped self-addressed envelope), but that was before I discovered LVIS, which is a huge help and makes reciprocal agreements less necessary. You can also e-mail; we've received a couple of e-mails from other libraries requesting reciprocal agreements.

Like you, we never charge, so the other libraries don't have much incentive for agreeing to reciprocal agreements; most libraries that charge have much larger collections than we do. I did write to a library last summer asking if they'd be willing to enter into a reciprocal agreement, reminding them that they could cancel it at any time, and mentioning that in the past few years they'd borrowed 24 items from us and we'd only borrowed one from them. (They charge $20 per loan.) Needless to say, they never replied.

Subject: [ILL-L] Setting up Reciprocal Agreements

Hello,

Can anyone tell me how to go about setting up reciprocal agreements with other libraries? We are an LVIS lender but I often feel like I end up choosing the same lenders even though I really do try hard not to.

How do you decide which libraries to contact? Do you do it individually... based on their collection, or other criteria? It seems time consuming, but this might also be a good "summer project".

Or, is it a moot point to set up a reciprocal agreement with anyone since we are LVIS? The other library would have nothing to gain since we already lend to them for free.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Holly
