Subject: [ILL-L] ILL operations in Information Commons, etc.

My academic library is thinking about combining the separate ILL,
circulation/reserves, reference/government documents, and technology
support services into a one-stop service center, possibly with only one
user services desk. If your library has a Information Commons or some
other similar mash-up of departments/services, what role, if any, does
your Interlibrary Loan operation play in that area? If you could answer
any of the questions below or simply share any of your experiences or
thoughts on this concept with me, I'll compile and share the results
with the entire list. Your assistance is greatly appreciated! I'm mainly
interested in academic libraries that have ILL involved with their
combined services area, but all responses are welcome.

1. Do you have a combined services area, often called an
Information Commons or Collaborative Learning Center? SOMEWHET.

2. What services are offered in this area: reference, circulation,
ILL, writing center, tutorial center, faculty/teaching excellence
center, etc.? CIRCULATION AND IT HELP

3. Are the various services combined into a one-stop shopping
service desk, arranged as a food court (separate desks or offices for
each, but all located closely together), or structured as some hybrid of
the two (ex: with circ & ref combined and the others like a food court)?

4. Where are the ILL staff offices and workspaces located in
relation to the combined services area? ANOTHER FLOOR

5. If the combined services area desk is separate from the ILL
office/workspace, do ILL staff work at the desk? If so: NO

a. With which other services/departments does ILL share the space,
if any?

b. How many hours do ILL staff each work at the desk?

c. Do ILL staff rotate to work on nights/weekends?

d. What ILL duties do ILL staff perform at the service desk, as
compared to what they perform in the ILL office area?

e. What non-ILL duties do ILL staff perform at the service desk:
reference interviews, checking in/out library materials, etc.?

6. If ILL staff serve on-call to the combined services area desk
(meaning they are not always on the desk, but can be called up to it),
how does that work at your location: buzzer/alarm sounds to call to
desk, phone call, instant message, etc.?

7. If ILL staff neither work at the combined services area desk nor
serve on-call, are patrons directed to or led to the ILL office area, or
are ILL questions instead answered by non-ILL employees at the desk?
SENT TO ILL

8. What ILL duties, if any, do non-ILL staff perform at the
combined services area desk: assistance with registration & requesting,
password resets, renewals, checking availability, processing and sending
requests to OCLC, Lending copy/pasting of call numbers, etc.? CHECK
OUT, RENEW, AND DISCHARGE ILL BOOKS

9. Where are ILL items to be picked up stored: in the ILL office
area, at the service desk, available on a public shelf, in some other
staff area, delivered directly to patrons at their home/office, etc.?
SERVICE AREA

10. Where are ILL items returned: regular bookdrops, special ILL
shelf/bookdrop, service desk, ILL office, etc.? SERVICE DESK

Thanks,

William
