Yes, you're probably right, it seems an odd thing to do anyway. If it's important enough to put on reserve, why not buy it? Ed.

Sorry, Ed, but I believe that National ILL code actually *forbids* putting ILL books on reserve.  And if it doesn't, it should. 
The reasons are multiple.  Others have addressed some of the reasons, but the #1 reason is what if the lender recalls the book?  Then the professor who put it on Reserve is kind of in a pickle (a nicer way of saying what I WANTED to say, but this being a public list and all...).

I could be wrong about it being in the National code, but I've always been told that it is.

I know we never allow ILL books on Reserve here - we're on a semester system and there are so few libraries that loan for 3 months anyway!
