Yes. Our patrons either return the book the next time they are on campus or
pay for the return postage. We've never had a complaint about the process.

So you have the patron pay for the return of the book? Any problems with
that?

UPS costs more to ship to a residential address than to a commercial
address. Regardless of this, they're far more expensive than the USPS. We
ship books to our distance education students using USPS First Class Package
mail or, if they have requested a lot of books) we will ship via USPS
Priority Mail. In this case, we've found that the Priority Mail Flat Rate
boxes - ordered free from the USPS website - can be quite a dollar saver.
You can print labels for USPS at their website AND get a discount on postage
(https://sss-web.usps.com/cns/landing.do).

At this point, the only thing that we're using UPS for is Audiovisual Items,
International Loans and very rare or fragile items.

I think we've had a discussion about this, but I couldn't locate it in the
archives. We are setting up procedures to ship books to our growing number
of Distance Ed students at their home addresses. We're looking at both UPS
and USPS. We like the labels and insurance with UPS but are wondering about
cost. We are also wondering if there will be concerns with shipping to a
personal address rather than a library address. Have those of you doing
this had any problems?
