[ILL-L] To pay or not?

We don't subsidize ILL fees at any level for our borrowers. When something
comes up with a fee the borrower gets an e-mail asking if they'll accept the
charges and if they do then we add them to their account. When we need to
order a back issue, we let them know that the library will be happy to
handle the ordering/shipping/receipt through our Acquisitions Department for
no extra fee or that they can order it themselves. They almost always
choose to order it themselves.

We would probably cover the cost if it is within our limits. The library
doesn't get to keep any other ILL books or articles that we borrow and pay
for, so really does it matter. I would come up with a policy, maybe after
you hear from others. Do you have any current policies or guidelines that
you publish that lets your patrons know what they can expect to borrow
through ILL? If you currently say that they cannot borrow entire journal
issues, then that may be your answer. Then again, it is faculty and some of
us have different policies for faculty compared to students. However, this
type of transaction is not between libraries, so some may think ILL should
not pay for it. But what about when you use a commercial document supplier
for articles, that's not another library either. Lots to think about.

We had a request from a faculty member for an issue - and we can only get it
buy purchasing the journal issue from the publisher directly. Is this
something that we should ask the faculty member to purchase directly, or,
since the price is within our limits for faculty, should we purchase it,
even though our library won't keep it? Any thoughts welcome, thanks,

This is the email I have about Harvard Business School cases:

SchoolCases
Sara is correct. All Harvard Business School case studies must be purchased
directly from Harvard Business School Publishing online at
http://www.hbsp.harvard.edu/b01/en/home/index.jhtml?_requestid=44896.
Generally one can download a case study online. Baker Library at Harvard
Business School is actually prohibited from collecting HBS case studies and
I doubt any other library would collect them so OCLC WRS is dead end for
cases.

I believe those cases have to be purchased directly from Harvard Business
School on an individual basis.
Information on purchasing this case can be found at
