[ILL-L] Audiovisual Lending

Unfortunately, OKI is having to cut back a little bit too - but mainly due
to the postage rate increases.

 

For the time being at least, we have stopped lending manga titles.  We get a
huge number of requests for them, but our librarians prefer not to send them
for several reasons.  First, we'll oftentimes we'll requests from the same
borrower for multiple volumes of a series, but we get the requests on
consecutive days rather than all at once; the librarians resent having to
"waste" postage on individual mailings to the same place.  Second, the manga
items (especially the small-size ones) tend to fall apart and lose pages,
and our librarians feel that lending them out on ILL shortens their "shelf
life" too much.  Finally, our library system is trying to emphasize its teen
programs this year and would prefer to keep the most popular "draws" for
that group on the shelves as much as possible.

I am very sorry to have to send this email.  Our county is experiencing the
second year of budget turndown and all departments have been given the task
of reducing their operating budgets.  The library has been able to manage a
portion of this by implementing a hiring freeze.  The situation has been
protracted by a reduction in taxes collected, and our Administration,
looking for more cost cutting, has placed a moratorium on lending and
borrowing of audio visual materials.  We have been proud to participate with
other reciprocal lenders and hope that this temporary measure will be short
lived.  This is effective immediately.
