Subject: RE: [ILL-L] Requesting renewals
Originally I only requested renewal if the patron asked for it, but this
created problems. Time and again I would remind the patron when the
book was one day overdue, and would get the response that the book was
needed for a few more weeks. Since the book was overdue, I felt it was
inappropriate to request renewal, so I'd order another copy from another
library. This ran into a lot of money (and time). I found it saved me
a lot of time, and the library a lot of money (and resulted in fewer
aggravated patrons) if I went ahead and requested renewal three days
before the due date (which is two days after the due date on the book
band; I try to get patrons to return books 5 days before they're due
back at the other library).
But this system hasn't cut down on overdues. Last year our library had
482 overdues-which won't sound like much to most of you, but we're a
small college with only about 1,000 students.

Just out of curiosity, do most of you automatically request ILL renewals
for your patrons? I usually wait until they ask for renewals. I don't
feel its my responsibility to keep track of everyone's due dates.
However, if they tell me in advance that they will need it longer, I
will mark this on my calendar and renew for them.
