[ILL-L] Sensitizing or De-Sensitizing Books Borrowed

We do not desensitize books from other libraries. We have an
information desk

at the exit doors and tell our ILL patrons to hand the book to the
person at the desk.

The Info Desk person hands them back the books after they go through
security.

Incoming ILL books are not altered in any way other than placing our
book bands

around them. Then we can send them back in the same condition they sent
them to us.

And we don't have extra equipment nor extra procedures to maintain.

Subject: [ILL-L] Sensitizing or De-Sensitizing Books Borrowed

I am interested in getting a general idea of how many libraries do not
sensitize or desensitize books that are borrowed from other libraries
and the reasoning behind your choice. Right now we just hand books
borrowed around the gate, since our current system is only alarmed on
the exit door. I believe that the reasoning for that goes way back to
a fear of interfering with someone else's security system.

However, with our new security system, patrons can enter and exit from
either door and there are security gates on both sides. This means that
the alarm will sound when students walk in with ILL books.

You may reply off the list if you prefer.
