[ILL-L] "Only update when requested" UPDATE!

Not updating to received would cause these consequences:
1- The lender would not get a lending credit towards their OCLC bill (although lending credits are not universal; your subscription pricing may not include them)
2- The lender would not get an IFM payment, if they were charging for the loan and
3- would need to take the extra effort to contact the borrower to get it.
4- The lender's special message file could get huge and if they are responsive as lenders they would be giving unnecessary attention to follow-ups.
5- When doing batch updates to complete, those requests not updated to received and returned must be handled individually to complete them. Also a responsive lender would take the time to contact the borrower to determine if the item actually arrived and if it needs to be resent.
5- Some lenders are willing to forgive lost charges if the item never arrives at the borrower; not updating to received could cause these generous folks to absorb more loss than they should.
Not updating to received leaves the lender holding the bag in several ways. It feels pretty much like 'not playing the game fairly' and a fair response would be to not lend to them.

Oh I think that was my bad!
I am now thinking they write in "will only update to RECEIVED when
requested!"
I think seeing a similar message and then getting multiple copies on an
article made me confused.
Sorry to alarm everyone!
Still, I do notice that some people take so long to update that i still
get multiple copies...I know larger libraries probably have less time to
update, but we update the next morning at the latest, since our work
study students often come in at night. Is this just a fact of ILL life?

Yes, I think it goes to the next library, and the sending library also
doesn't get the OCLC credit for filling an ILL since we can't update it
to received, Ed.

I've seen several requests come through from different lenders who say
that they "only update to "shipped" when requested" in the notes.
I'm confused on why lenders would not update that they sent an
item...doesn't the request then go on to the next lender, even if you
update to received? (At least that is what happens when you update in
clio, because it will not overlay in OCLC if I say "recieved" yet it has
not been "sent" yet.)
If I forget to ask them to update (and I'll admit that I usually do), I
get another copy from another library. Then I feel bad for making them
do work for nothing!
I guess I'm wondering what the reasoning is for not updating. Enlighten
me!
Thanks,
