[ILL-L] "Only update when requested" UPDATE!

I can see those public libraries who serves many branch libraries can be complicated to update without using ILL management software (ILLiad, Clio, etc.) If you don't update properly, getting no credit, won't be able to construct accurate statistics and possibly receive bill twice on the same transction(if both libraries charges). We receive the second copy or item 2-3 per week. When I happened to notice, I email the next lender for cancellation. It is very nuisance.

That would be a non-starter with my bunch. I could maybe hound some of my
branches into telling me what has arrived - but there would always be some
items that never leave "shipped" status. After 3 years on the job I've just
now got most of them trained to let me know when they return their items.
As for each branch updating WRS themselves, it's a nice idea but in
practical terms in my library system it would result in total chaos! I need
to keep track of what's going on, and the only way to do that is to do it
myself. (Which is what keeps me in a job, incidentally.)
I've often thought that some type of interim status between "shipped" and
"received" might be useful, to let borrowers acknowledge that a request was
filled without implying the item has arrived.

The flip side of this are those libraries that say "we update to
received when you say shipped". While that gets us our IFM payment,
it makes the system useless for tracking. These libraries tend to be
ones that also never update to returned. I understand that they are
often a central borrower handling requests for many libraries, where
the loan is shipped directly to the end-user library, but it would be
preferable to institute a system in which those end-users could
either update WRS themselves, or notify the central borrower as to status.
Off my soapbox, now.
