[ILL-L] "Only update when requested" UPDATE!

On copy requests, we monitor that it has been received. If not updated to
received in OCLC, we resend after a day or so. If still not received after 1
week, we'll send it a third time a third way. One logical recourse is to
email the borrowing ILL dept, but experience has shown me that most of these
emails go unanswered. We shouldn't have to spend taxpayer moneys on long
distance calls to confirm receipt.

I'd like to raise a red flag on returned loans that are still in shipped
status. Five of our borrowing requests this semester were never received by
us and fortunately were returned to the lending library. That library closed
the request, assuming we just didn't update OCLC. I can see this if the
return is 1 month after the due date, but in three of these cases the
material arrived back home within 4 days.

I concur. We,too, want our lending credits. Of course, we want the work of
the library staff as well as the work of the ILL staff to get the credit due
us. 5-10% of our returned borrowed books are still in SHIPPED or RECEIVED
status. Usually, borrowers will update when we remind them. Some ignore
our e-mails (many repeated)-- until they get the overdue notice our IMS
generates or wait to respond until they get the automatic billing notice .

Not updating to "received" is our pet peeve. Why would you not do that? We
would like to get our lender credit.

Oh I think that was my bad!

I am now thinking they write in "will only update to RECEIVED when
requested!"

I think seeing a similar message and then getting multiple copies on an
article made me confused.

Sorry to alarm everyone!

Still, I do notice that some people take so long to update that i still get
multiple copies...I know larger libraries probably have less time to update,
but we update the next morning at the latest, since our work study students
often come in at night. Is this just a fact of ILL life?
