[ILL-L] mailing large heavy books in an envelope

Another thing to remember is that not all of us are from well funded schools
who purchase packaging materials. Those of us who get new materials are
often subject to the whims of the purchasing department regarding type and
size of padded envelope and availability of boxes. I've found it helpful to
coordinate with our acquisitions department and get them to save the boxes
that new books arrive in, which are generally "new" and in good condition.

I agree. I have a new student working for me this semester who is driving me
nuts. This kid has no common sense. I found a heavy hardbound book in an
overlarge bubble wrap bag in the mail one day. It was being shipped to a
library one hour west of us. He hadn't stapled it properly and the opening
was all raggedy. I picked up the bag, turned it upside down, gave it a hard
shake the book fell right out of the bag. The next morning, I told him he
needs to 1) clean up the edges on the opening so they aren't raggedy, 2) use
more staples, and 3) put a heavy book like that in a container that it
wouldn't slide around in. I told him the book would never have made it to
the requesting library. I despair. There just seems to be no common sense
about these kinds of things. He said he wondered later if he should have
cleaned up the edges of the bag. I told him he's going to have to think of
these things *before* he puts them in the mail.

I do not complain too often on this list, but I cannot help myself on this
one. We received a package this morning that completely fell apart in the
mail. The book is very large (10.25 x 13.25 x 2.5) and very heavy. The
lending library placed this book in one of those fluff envelopes to mail
when this is an item that clearly should have been boxed.

Large and heavy books, or sending multiple books in one package, should be
boxed.

Code indicates that the borrowing library is responsible from the time the
item leaves the lending library to the time it is received back at the
lending library. Packaging large heavy books or multiply heavy volumes in
an envelope just isn't right. I feel that if the books get lost or damaged
in the mail we should not have to pay for them because of poor packaging by
lenders.

I would love to know how others feel about this topic.

Sincerely,

Sue
