I thought the explanations were very helpful.

However, we had one professor who kept the same articles on reserve year after year after year. We felt that it violated the spontaneity clause, so we looked for ways around this -- free articles on the web and in our full-text databases. We also looked into purchasing reprints of articles not available on the web or in our databases.

The students preferred the web and full-text articles because they could print out at home instead of paying photocopying fees. We appreciated not having to deal with students wanting articles but not having a clue as to which one they needed. For some reason they thought we should know which articles they needed.

It's my understanding that it's not against copyright compliance to put
an article on reserve, but there are restrictions. Interpretations
vary, but our system policy is available freely online at
http://www.umsystem.edu/ums/departments/gc/rules/business/100/010.shtml.

Hope that helps!

I've been challenged by a co-hort as to why it is against copyright
compliance to put a copy of an article on reserve. Is there any proof
of this out there? Where is it written that...?
