[ILL-L] "lost" mail dilemma

I agree with the rest- approach the libraries individually. I wouldn't
just keep them. They aren't yours to keep and it may create some
problems for your library in the future. I know our software won't
allow us to easily renew overdue lending materials. Some of the
libraries that answered no may have customer/patron holds on the books.
The due date for our materials is 2 months from the day we send it out.
We do not renew because the loan period is so long and we have SORRY! NO
RENEWALS! on loan labels and loan slips. Despite this, we've had
requests to renew materials that were already 2 months overdue in the
past few months- I suppose, they wanted to keep them for 6 months in
all. On the opposite end of this, we still get requests for renewals-
often when the due date is a month and a half in the future.

Hi, Stefanie:
This happens not infrequently to us, but never that many at one time!
I'd keep them and send them to fill my patron's requests, and e-mail (or
call if necessary) the lenders to explain and ask for a renewal. I bet
most of them will give it to you when they know the circ's.

Yesterday I finally received 2 mail buckets full of ILL's that had been
mailed a month ago. All of the items were at "Received ?" status and
when
I marked them received I also asked for renewals. Here's my problem.
Most
of the lending libraries said no and the items are already due and/or
overdue. What would you do? Keep them any way? Call each library and
explain the problem hoping to change their mind? Return them all and
start
over, again having my patrons wait even longer? I'm not talking one or
two
items but 22! What would you do?
Stefanie
