If you use Ariel's Send function using the receiving library's Ariel
email address, rather than the Send to Patron function, the articles
will be received into Ariel, not as attachments. The receiving
library can then process the files however works best for them--print
and give to patron, use patron delivery to send as either TIF or PDF
attachement, use patron delivery to post to server, use the article
functions within ILLIAD, use Prospero to get the copies to patrons, etc.
If you use Ariel's Send to Patron function to send to other
libraries, you can set it to send as PDF or as TIF. The article will
then be received as a regular email attachment, not into the
receiving library's Ariel receipt queue, so don't use this option to
send to an Ariel email address.
That said, anyone with a current computer operating system has a TIF
viewer built in. In Windows it's the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer,
in Mac OS X (any version) it's Apple Preview. There are others
available but these two are built into the operating systems.
