Yes, exactly, the way we get around it is to supply the abstract as they
asked for it, and add a note that they can request the full dissertation
of they wish. The few we've gotten seem beyond the student's needs,

We received several requests for abstracts from
Dissertation abstracts international. We have access via Dialog, does
anyone know if Dialog allows it to be loaned ILL? Thanks,
It would probably depend on the licensing agreement you have
with Dialog. You'll have to ask whoever is responsible for tracking that
information at your library. But--are you sure the requests are truly
for the abstracts & not intended to be for the dissertations themselves,
with the citations merely drawn from Diss Abstracts? The abstracts for
most US dissertations are very short (one or two pages), unlike those of
many European dissertations (often 25 pages or more), and therefore not
particularly useful for research purposes.
As Joe said, I'd make SURE your patron is requesting the abstract.
Psychinfo and a couple other databases map over the Abstract cite, when
the patron thinks it's actually an article (trust me, SO few patrons
understand that a Dissertation is a BOOK, not an article). We have a
special cancellation message just for DissAbs, because I got tired of
constantly emailing them to see if they knew what they were asking for
(we have an e-sub to DissAbs anyway).
It basically says "HSU owns Dissertation Abstracts online. If you
actually want the DISSERTATION (a big ol' book), please use the
Dissertation/Thesis form instead. Thank you.
I'm betting your patrons don't know that they're requesting an abstract
to a 2 volume, 800 page thesis on helicobactor pylori, Ed. (or whatever
it is that it's about).
