I don't see how an email attachment would be less secure than Ariel or Odyssey, when both Ariel and Odyssey allow you to have the article automatically print, on what could be seen as a not-so-private printer.
I've never heard of a licensing agreement, if it allows you to ILL, also stipulating the method of transmission.

I was under the impression that it was not a good idea to email articles
to patrons or libraries because email is not a secure method of
tranmission, and the licensing agreements usually called for greater
security.
