Please excuse and ignore my e-mail. I didn't intend for it to go to the list serve.

There aren't very many that can't be sent via ariel. When I return from Seattle I can show Michael how to send articles PDF after I make sure I know how. I know there are instructions on the wall. Sometimes I have Michael use the copy machine while Tina is using the Ariel station. When that occurs it will be more time effective to have Michael fax or stick the articles in the mail.

We use Ariel, but we also email PDF files as much as possible. It saves us postage and the cost of faxing, and gets the item to the borrowing library and their patron that much faster. If a library doesn't have an Ariel address, and they've supplied an email, we'll send it that way.
The only time we don't is if there are dark (black or gray) graphs, charts, images...they don't transmit very well. We'll mail those items.
We have an "order of preference" - Ariel, Email, fax/mail (or ship through our in-state delivery system).
We also try, when sending a message via email, to include this signature (we've saved these signatures in our signature files iin Microsoft Outlook).
Please find attached the article you asked for, in Acrobtat PDF format. Acrobat readers may be downloaded
for free from http://adobe.com/products/acrobat/readermain.html.
Although it seems that every library including an email address will have the ability to read a PDF document, we send the this statement just in case.
On another note:
We keep the paper copies and periodically check OCLC to make sure the library has updated to received before we toss them. If they haven't updated, and its been a few days, we'll email and ask if the copy needs to be resent. We do the same with our PDF files...we keep them in our "pdf folder" on our PC desktop, and check to make sure they're received. We have standard signature files that ask:
Hello,
We supplied an article to you and sent it via Ariel. It's still in Shipped mode in OCLC. Have you received it? If not, let us know and we'll send again.
Sincerely,
Etc...we have them for fax and email too. It's quick and easy...we've cut down messages indicating "not received" considerably.

Subject: [ILL-L] Emailing articles
Hi all,
My staff is reevaluating our current delivery practices on the lending side--we're being encouraged to go more paperless. Although we have Ariel and have no plans to not use it, we are also debating sending requested articles to institutions as PDF files via email. Do other institutions use this method, and is there any benefit to it? Are there issues that I am not thinking of?
I'd appreciate some feedback on this.
