[ILL-L] Book Labels

If the book doesn't come with a bookstrap or labels, I put one of ours
on it. I do appreciate the lender putting one on, it saves me a couple
of steps in the processing.

The odd thing is that apparently some libraries DO use the lending
library's bookstrap... I don't remember who - but we get back ones on a
regular basis that have their barcode stuck on our bookstrap, or have
written the patron's name and phone number on it...

As for here, we put our own bookstrap OVER the lending library's
bookstrap... or rather tape it to it- I often don't make the back of the
bookstrap if there's already one on it... but the point being - we never
take someone else's bookstrap off...

The one thing I don't understand is the libraries who take the bookstrap
off and then upon returning it TAPE the front of it to the front of the
book - just stick it inside the front cover like everyone else if need
be, but why are you using tape on another library's book? Just seems
odd to me (we haven't had a real problem with getting the tape off yet -
it just seems odd to me - why add an extra step on their part for that
matter?)

We stopped putting bookstraps on the books we lend when we noticed that
very few of them came back with the bookstrap still on them. I don't
know of any libraries that use a bookstrap provided by the lending
library, so decided that it was probably a waste of labor.

The only problem we've had is that books aren't always identified as ILL
when they come back without something obvious (like a bookstrap), which
is why we're considering labels

I'm seeing more books (?) that we borrow coming in without bookstraps of
any kind from the lending libraries, just a slip of identification from
ILLiad, which is OK with me since we put on a borrowing book strap. Any
thoughts on this? thanks, Ed.

May I also suggest that you remove the labels and all residue left
behind before returning to the lending library? I have received our own
books back with somebody's labels on them & have had to spend time
removing the labels & residue myself. I much prefer not having labels
placed on our books.

We just started using those "removable" labels when we got ILLiad
recently. I think they're Avery 6464 labels. If you have Clio or
ILLiad, there should be something in their program to set up label
printing. If you don't use either Clio or ILLiad, I guess you'd just use
the label functionality in MS Word to make the labels.

Our students are to put the labels on book bands when the book being
sent has a paper-like cover (even if the book is hardbound) because
removing the label sometimes makes tears in the paper.

Siena laminates most of its new paperbacks and the removable labels are
hard to remove from the laminate, often leaving a sticky residue. In
those cases, we've found that a paper towel with a little mineral
spirits on it removes labels and residue great, without damaging the
laminate cover. You should be able to find a can of mineral spirits at
Lowe's, Home Depot, or other hardware store.

Hope this helps,

Hi Everyone,
We are still using book bands when sending and receiving ILL
materials. I've been seeing more and more libraries use the "sticky"
labels on their books and would like to get some information on the
labels. First, what kind are they, where do you purchase them and
what program do you use to print them? Cost? Is there any problem
with residue left on the materials? Are there books that you wouldn't
use them on? Pros and cons are requested.

I'm gathering the information to see if this is the way we want to
go. Thanks in advance.
