[ILL-L] Book Labels

Troy and all,
The removable label makers swear their products leave no residue but it
really varies depending upon what is labeled. I have discovered that if
you put a 6464 label on an item with a cloth or leather binding you can
actually feel a residue when you peel off the label. Since our library
bindings are largely cloth, we don't want them to have labels, sticky
notes or any other sticky objects attached to them.
Because the removable labels are advertized as residue free it's hard
to find anything negative written about them but this email from the
ILLIAD listserv might be useful:

The Library of Congress posts some worthy preservation information at
http://www.loc.gov/preserv/careothr.html
and here's the word from ALA/RUSA

I checked with our Rare Book Librarian, and she had lots of info for
anything rare or fragile

The rule of thumb has always been (for rare materials, anyway) is to
never put anything on a book you want to remove. The removal process is
time-consuming and can involve hazardous chemicals. There are many, many
antiquarian books for sale that mention label damage in one spot or
another.

Our library actually does use the removable labels to identify outgoing
AV materials in jewel cases. We don't worry about the plastic cases
being damaged because the cases are apt to break long before label
chemicals would break them down.
It all comes down to what an individual library chooses to do with
their own materials. I still feel that borrowing libraries should
never do anything that might damage borrowed materials.

Hi Linda,
Do you know if there is anything written about this topic.
Thanks for any information.
