After many years of our security system sounding and our users (who are quick learners) saying that they had ILL materials that had not been desensitized, we finally began desensitizing ILL materials, and resensitizing them when they were returned.
Does it add work? Yes.
Does it return materials in a state in which they were not loaned? Maybe.
Does it make it possible for our security system to operate? Yes. Which might be the greater good.
I'm hoping that libraries that have security systems automatically resensitize their books when they get them back. We do.
