[ILL-L] Reasons for no

I would rather have 'policy problem'. It reflects more precisely why you are declining my loan.

Ooh that's a good idea - the auto deflect doesn't work for us either, as
our policy is that we don't lend books within 6 months of them having
been cataloged... so sometimes these books might be quite a few years
old, but because they are new to us, we don't lend them... using "In
Process" seems like a potentially better option than my current "Policy
Problem" - what does everyone else think?

Linda,
I won't be using the new auto-deflection either; because the only
new books we don't ILL are books which the library has chosen to set
aside for its "New Books" display, or which have been specifically
requested by departments/individual patrons. I consider the temporarily
non-circulatory status of these books to be a part of our acquisitions
process (only completed once they have been updated to "regular loan"
status in our catalog). I have been using "In Process" as a reason for
no when these books are requested.

Fortunately, some of our branches will loan new items - so a blanket
deflection by pub date would be "overkill". We do request some new
items, so I'd like to continue to lend them as well, whenever I can.
(Besides, our definition of "new" is 6 months, so a current year
deflection would result in "overkill" too, starting in July and
increasing in severity throughout the rest of the year.)
Maybe I should just used "in use on loan" for the almost-ready items, so
anyone who does take the time to retry when necessary might benefit.

Further to an earlier discussion on this subject, what would be the
ramifications of using Volume issue not yet available to indicate that
a book (or any other item) is too new to loan, instead of using Policy
problem? Borrowers could tell from the item description whether the
reason refers to a serial (issue not yet available) or non-serial (owned
but too new).
It might confuse some borrowers (say, me for example) because I'm used
to seeing that reason when it's a journal/serial request. It might be
nicer if you just set up deflections for current year imprints, which I
believe is one of the new features that OCLC is going to implement (if
it wasn't included in the most recent upgrade).
I have been using policy problem, but some of these items are due to
come off new status shortly, and this would let the borrower know to
try again later if necessary.
I wouldn't even know to try later. If you used policy problem, I would
just go to other libraries. Unfortunately, the reasons for no can't
cover EVERY little special circumstance all us libraries have for
lending. Can you imagine how long the list would be? :-)
