[ILL-L] Huzzah!

Good afternoon Heather,
Your note to Alison made me want to respond as I'm in the same boat as she. I've been able send requests & responses for a year now but a lot of the detailed stuff I'm still somewhat lost (including custom holdings). I do remember to ask JPL twice though. Thanks for the sentiments.
Oddly enough I was also a GovDocs librarian for a decade... in Tampa.
Regards,
John

Alison:
I think we've all been newbies at one time or another. And as we get new enhancements to resource sharing, we all become newbies again as we try to figure out how the new enhancements will work for us. You've taken the initiative to join this list and had the courage to ask for advice and look for better ways to serve your clientele. I think that's commendable. It takes a while to get up to speed with the ins and outs of this work. This list has been a great help to me. My ILL experience was from so long ago that it was only minimal help when I came back to ILL a few years ago. I often feel a bit isolated in this job sometimes. I'm in a unique position here- just as our Government Documents librarian is- where I'm the only professional who understands what's going on and the concerns that are involved. I've had two supervisors since I've been doing ILL and only the current one has made the effort to see what ILL is all about. So, having listservs as a tool for improvement and as a support has been essential to me in my continuing ILL education. I know I look at ILL from a public library prospective but I'll be happy to help if I can.

Apologies to everyone - I hadn't completely thought out our process, I was just following my predecessor's methods and I hadn't thought about how unfair it really was until now. Just wanted to let everyone know we will be working out some method that will work and won't require us asking other libraries to do things they ought not to have to do. (How we're going to do it I have no clue, but obviously that's our problem and not someone else's, and we have no right to try to pass our problems on to someone else)
Again apologies to anyone we may have asked this of in the past. I've only been doing ILL since the beginning of the summer, and so this past week was my first time having to get dissertations for our psychology students. I should have thought everything through instead of assuming that what we had been doing in the past was acceptable.

At the risk of getting flamed, lenders who have their lending fees listed in the Policies Directory should not have to send Conditionals to inform requesting libraries about routine costs. The Policies Directory exists so that requesting libraries can inform themselves about policies, fees, etc., BEFORE requesting, especially in the case of hard to get items, for which only a few libraries policies would need to be checked. - Margaret Ellingson

I'm not happy to ear about the Borrower's Max Cost bit - we always have $0 in there, but in the case of dissertations and other things that are hard to get, occasionally our students are willing to pay, so currently we put in "0 - Please Conditional with Cost" because we need to know the exact amount before we can ask the student if they want to pay that amount (and then we've got to actually get the check from them before we can say yes to the loan). I've wondered about putting ONLY "Please Conditional with Cost" in that field so that libraries wouldn't ignore it and say no based on our Max Cost - but I wasn't sure whether that was legit or not. What do the rest of ya'll with similar policies of passing along costs to your patrons do?

I was excited to read this:
Future enhancements to WorldCat Resource Sharing include:
Additional deflection via the Policies Directory including the ability to deflect requests based on the Borrowers MAXCOST, age of material and if your institution is the last lender in the lender string (i.e. don't deflect if I'm the last lender). Target date: November 2007
.....But I'm puzzled about the last "deflector". What's the advantage of this enhancement?

WorldCat Resource Sharing Install Update Pre Install Announcement
This Sunday, October 7 WorldCat Resource Sharing will install the following enhancements:
* Users will be able to more accurately represent their reason for not filling a request with a new reason for no within the drop down menu: "Not licensed to fill." This explanation should be used when the lending library owns the item but due to contractual obligations are unable to fill the borrowing request (e.g. electronic resources).
* Borrowers will be able to remedy incorrect citations and get materials to their users more quickly with an improvement to how "Not found as cited" is handled. When the reason for no is "Not found as cited", the request will be immediately returned as Unfilled for the borrower to correct the citation. It will no longer be routed to any additional lenders.
* Users will be able to print labels when individual requests are processed as well as through batch functionality (Aug. 2007).
Policies Directory Update Reminder: when users log onto the Policies Directory they'll be taken to an intermediate screen that will ask that they update their policies. Target date: November 2007
Printing enhancements: Users of WCRS will have the ability to print bookstraps as well as improved 1- and 2-per-page printing. Target date: December 2007
