POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Librarian III - Acquisitions Librarian (4, 312 per month-Job Code: 6NV403)
JOB SUMMARY: The Acquisitions Librarian performs complex professional and administrative work in the operation of acquisitions for the Library. Responsibilities involve the supervision and management of all aspects of library acquisitions. Work requires advanced knowledge of acquisitions and serials procedures in the Voyager© and OCLC© systems, and includes ordering, receiving, and invoicing, for monographs, serials, and subscription products. Knowledge of current library practices for acquiring and accessing library resources is essential, along with high level skills in accounting and financial management. Work is performed under minimal supervision with latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Additional responsibilities include maintaining department statistics, training of others, and providing leadership within the Acquisitions section.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to: Assistant Director of Libraries for Collections and Technical Services, Denton Campus
Supervision: Three (3) acquisitions library assistants
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
May include, but are not limited to the following:
Formulates, recommends, and implements policies and procedures for the efficient operation of the acquisitions section
Identifies future goals, prepares annual achievement statements, and oversees basic functions of acquisitions
Determines staffing recommendations and trains new personnel in acquisitions and serials duties
Insures that internal policies and procedures are consistent with state, university, and library wide standards and guidelines
Maintains financial accountability for library purchasing
Coordinates relationships and responsibilities within acquisitions and other library sections
Communicates with vendors and publishers on a regular basis, often to resolve accounting related problems
Assists in the evaluation and acquisitions of library materials, equipment, and other resources
Develops survey instruments and evaluates services for effectiveness
Responsible for establishing job standards for subordinate staff and effectively evaluating other acquisitions staff
Prepares departmental budget requests and reports
Tracks library materials expenditures, providing periodic reports and analysis
Responsible for successfully closing the fiscal year
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Pursues funding and donations from various sources as part of a development team
Provides professional assistance and may act as an advisor to users of the Library including faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, and other user groups
Promotes information literacy through marketing, instruction and services
Assists in updating documentation and web pages
Participates in discussions and work of professional library associations
Performs additional job-related duties and responsibilities as requested
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution. Second master's degree preferred
Experience: Five (5) years of experience in library acquisitions, with progressively responsible work assignments and supervisory responsibilities
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Working knowledge of office practices and methods
Skills in technology to perform at a high level with library systems, software, the internet, and automated business practices
In depth skills with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Access)
Ability to perform mathematical calculations and/or verify information accurately
Ability to coordinate work with other employees, providing direct supervision as assigned
Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities
Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public
Ability to communicate effectively orally, by telephone, email, in person, and in writing
Ability to prepare and present training sessions
Ability to work with detailed information and processes and maintain accuracy
Ability to represent the department and University in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner
Ability to access and use library resources effectively
Ability to supervise others
Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment
Ability to respond to emergency situations in a timely manner
Ability to operate essential office equipment that is necessary to perform the functions of this job

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; speak and hear. Specific vision abilities required by the job include ability to distinguish the nature of objects by using the eye. May be required to sit for long periods of time.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Employees are responsible for performing their duties in an environment that is free from discrimination, intimidation, coercion or harassment, including sexual harassment. Work is performed primarily indoors in an office setting. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate. The employee may be required to travel. Hands, body, and mind dexterity is required.
SAFETY: Assists in the creation of a culture of safety and environmental protection by performing work safety in accordance with departmental safety procedures. Operates equipment safely and reports unsafe work conditions or practice to supervisor.
