[ILL-L] ILL - To reply Policy Problem, or not?

I agree, a comment field would be really useful. Sometimes when we're the
last lender on the string I'd like to tell the borrower "please try again in
a few weeks if still looking" because I know the item will be out of new
status by then. I've even been known to mark something "No - In use on
loan" when it's really No - Policy Problem (too new), in the hopes that the
borrower will try again later if they need to.
But, that said, there's no guarantee the borrower will read a "Policy
Problem Comments" field any more than they check their conditionals, and I
agree with a previous poster who said they had problems with conditionals
not being responded to.
I do have a note in my Policies Directory stating that for OKI the use of
"No - Other" means the branch owning the item is temporarily closed for ILL.
Once again, a "try again soon" message that didn't tie up the request would
be helpful, since not everyone looks to the Policies Directory for
explanations.

We use policy problem as well - though I do wish there were other
options (or at least a comment note spot for policy problem - so you
could put "Policy Problem - too new" or "Policy Problem - do not lend
CDs" or whatever it might be... I just always feel that people will see
"Policy Problem" and wonder what in the world the policy problem might
be in a few cases that aren't obvious (our "too new" would apply to
anything cataloged in the last 6 months - regardless of the date
published, for example...) But I don't want to have to do one of those
conditionals that tell you to choose no either...

Fay,
In this case we also would use Policy Problem. We take Policy Problem
to mean, look in our Policies and you should be able to tell why we
aren't sending it. If you have listed there that you don't lend new
items, then as a borrower I would understand that it might be available
at a later date.
When I don't see something to explain the reply, and if that library is
my only hope for borrowing, then I have contacted them and asked for
clarification.

I was wondering how everyone else replies to a request for a New item,
that
will come off New status in a year, and would be available to circulate?
Our ILL policy, at BLP, says that we do not loan New items, so the
logical
reply is Policy Problem. I would like to see a new reason added to the
list, "Too New To Lend." This new reason, to me, would indicate that at
a
later time a new request could be made on that item when it is no longer
New.
What do you folks think?
