[ILL-L] RE: Jiffy bags

Some of my staff are convinced the 'gray matter' is toxic. We don't
recycle them; the fluff stops here. Viva bubble mailers!

They are such a mess! One time I ordered some journals from the BackMed
list but I didn't get the correct issues sent & everything was a mess
inside. I mailed them all back in that messy "fluff" mailer.

They do seem to give a little bit better support to "bendy" items like
the large, thin paperbacks. I do try to reinforce all the "stress
points" with tape when I use them, though. And never, ever use for
audiotape or VHS (or any other AV material).

Are Jiffy bags really that much cheaper than bubble mailers? I just
don't understand why people would use them unless they're QUITE a bit
cheaper...

What I really don't understand is libraries who send our materials back
in Jiffy bags - its one thing to get Jiffy fluff all over your own book,
but some one else's? Just doesn't make sense to me...

(Then again - this is part of the reason that as long as an mailer is in
good enough shape, I always save the ones that books from other
libraries come in and send them back in the same mailer - impossible for
larger ILL operations I know, but I figure then no one can accuse me of
not packing it well enough if I use the same (or equivalent if the
mailer is ruined) packaging to send it back to them!)

What I wouldn't give for a no-jiffy-bags group! All of our incoming
packages get screened by security (which means they cut open the side of
the package, of course) and I've got jiffy-fluff all over me by the time
the package gets to the library.

By the way, does anyone have custom holdings for Libraries That Don't
Put Sticky Labels on Books and Don't Send Them in Jiffy Bags with Yucchy
Fluff Spilling Out of Them?
