When we looked in the magazine, we found the same citation you did. It
appears to be a continuously paginated volume, so while we checked the
index for that volume as well as the table of contents, it doesn't seem
likely to be in another issue for that magazine. The article itself
holds no reference to Hardie's formula which is what the patron was
trying to verify.
I agree, in regards to the missing info. I get very frustrated by
shoddy/incomplete citations in publications, or just fields that don't
encourage scholars to do citations with all the information!
Ah well...
Thanks for looking!

Are you sure of the author's name? I tried Reader's Guide
Retrospective, which indexes Sky and Telescope. Volume 58 is indeed
1979, but there seem to be no articles by a Hardie in Sky & Telescope in
1979 (or any other year, except for an R.H. Hardie in 1971).This is what
I found for page 25 of vol. 58, so I assume it's what you found (no
author given):
Aids for the calculating amateur astronomer <javascript:void 0;> . Sky
and Telescope v. 58 (July 1979) p. 25-7
Since this is a monthly, I assume 25 is a page number and not an issue
number.
Sorry I can't help more. I get so frustrated by citations that don't
include titles (but apparently this is how scholars in some fields are
taught to do citations--author, year, and page numbers, but no title!).

Subject: [ILL-L] Verify citation for Sky & Telescope
Hi everyone,
I have an interesting citation that doesn't seem to make sense. The
citation given in the bibliography the patron has is this:
Hardie, S. 1979, Sky and Telescope, 58, 25.
We don't have a title, so we can't check that, but when we look in the
Sky & Telescope 58, 25. The information cited (a formula) is not in
the
article. There is also no author listed. Everything else, year,
volume,
and page numbers match up. Ulrichs lists several places that index Sky
&
Telescope, but many are ones we don't have access to. Since there
isn't
a title listed, it's a bit difficult to check as well.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
Thanks!
