[ILL-L] ARIEL/SCANNER FUJITSU 5220c TOO LIGHT

When scanning articles direct from journals we are finding first that
the printed pages on most journals now are much lighter print than prior
years.
Now we are back to photocopying on a dark setting before sending...

Along with this problem, I think our scanner has a major problem.  About
1/4 of the scanning of the left side of a page is very very light - and
not legible.  
I am wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem and has a
solution.    I did speak with a technical person at Fujitsu and it got
way too techy for me and I would need to have I.T's help.  Perhaps new
driver - or even cleaning glass and lights with alcohol.  

Any advise will be appreciated.
