[ILL-L] Academic Status for librarians

Cristina - Our library faculty have faculty status (we are lecturers)
but no faculty rank. We are appointed on a one year contract and at the
conclusion of the 4th year, apply for a five year contract. This review
is done by a committee selected within the library and the
recommendation for granting a five year contract is made to our
University Librarian. He may concur or dissent with the committee's
recommendation but the outcome is either a) the librarian receives a
five year contract commencing immediately or b) the librarian does not
receive a five year contract and has one more year to look for other
opportunities. This system was put into place about 10 years ago so
it's not within your preferred transition time but I hope is a valid
option for you to consider. All library faculty are expected to
publish, be active professionally, participate in library and University
committees and engage in service outside the University.
Let me know if you would like more information.

Cristina,
The librarians at Stetson University have had full and equal faculty
status for many years now. Having pay increases tied to the faculty pay
scale can certainly be a benefit (but not always, as faculty here have
sometimes had less of a raise pool than staff). Librarians certainly do
not make as much money as teaching faculty members (nor do professors in
the Music School make as much as professors in the Business school). In
addition to possible salary advantages, there are lots of intangible
benefits of faculty status in collegiality and inclusiveness in the
campus decision-making process.
With the benefits, however, come the expectations of publication and
service that would be expected of any other faculty member. Despite
working on 12-month contracts as opposed to the 9-month teaching faculty
contracts, our librarians are expected to compete equally in the
promotion and tenure process -- going up before the same University P&T
committee as everyone else with the same pressures to publish and serve
on committees. We have lost librarians to this process, although most
of our librarians have made it through and some have excelled.
You say "some sort of academic status" and I know there exists a
multitude of arrangements at different schools. Full faculty status,
however, involves a huge commitment of time and energy outside the 40
hour work week that some librarians do not wish to make.

The ZSR Library at Wake Forest is looking into the benefits and
processes of having some sort of academic status for the exempt
staff. The faculty here on campus is often the focus in the discussion
for salary increases and the staff is always left out. We would like to
change that by obtaining a system of faculty status. As you can
imagine there is some anxiety in the library about this. I was
wondering if your library has a similar system and I am especially
interested in libraries that just instituted the system in the past 3-5
years. Thanks for your response.
