Subject: [ILL-L] 7 Things I Am No Longer Allowed to Do As Vice-Chair of
the ILL Discussion Group
The Seven Things*:
1. Not allowed to trade IFLA vouchers for 'magic beans.'
2. Not allowed to trade student workers/pages for 'magic beans.'
2. My official title is 'Vice-Chair of the RUSA/STARS ILL Discussion
Group,' not 'Vice-Librarian in Charge of the Planet of Babe-a-licious
Patrons.'
3. May not use planetary scanner to 'squish' things.
4. The proper response to an ALA Conference planning deadline is not
"Why?"
5. Crucifixes may not be used to ward off patrons.
6. I may no longer put off the call for nominees to be Vice-Chair in
2007-2008.
Now that I have your attention... :-) ... Please excuse cross-posting.
The ILL Discussion Group is seeking nominations for Vice-Chair for next
year. If you're interested in resource sharing and would like to become
involved on the national level, please consider nominating yourself.
What are the Vice-Chair's duties?
The Vice-Chair assists the Chair in the business of the Group, but these
duties are not onerous, consisting mainly of email communication.
What about travel?
You don't have to be going to this conference in Washington DC to be
elected! While it's ideal to attend Mid-Winter after election, it is
not mandatory. The Vice-Chair must attend the next ALA Annual
Conference after election, where he or she will assume the
responsibilities of the Chair.
Hey, you can't fool me -- election to Vice-Chair means eventually I'll
be Chair! What are those duties?
The duties of the Chair include attending both Mid-Winter and the Annual
Conference and planning and chairing the ALA RUSA/STARS ILL Discussion
Group program at those meetings. Again, not too bad!
What is the nomination process?
Please send your name and a brief professional biography to me at
hensleyk at etsu.edu. I'll put together the slate of candidates, and the
Group will vote for the next Vice-Chair at ALA in DC. If you will be at
the meeting, we'll ask you to make a brief speech (2-3 minutes -- you
can use the biography you just wrote) so the Group can get to know you
better. If you won't be at the meeting, one of the current officers
(i.e., me) will read your prepared statement.
When do I have to decide?
Ideally, we would like to hear from you before June 18, 2006. However,
our bylaws also allow nominations from the floor during the business
meeting, so the slate will not close until after that call, shortly
before the election.
Why should I apply?
No, no - see #4 above. You can't ask why. Seriously, though, it's a
great way to meet your peers, to examine the issues, to become involved
in our national association. Plus, impress your friends and colleagues
by having the longest title in all of ALA-dom: Vice Chair of the
Sharing and Transforming Access to Resources Section (STARS) ILL
Discussion Group, of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA)
of the American Library Association.
If you have other questions about becoming a candidate for Vice-Chair or
about the ALA RUSA/STARS ILL Discussion Group, please feel free to
contact me. If you know someone who does not monitor this list, but
would be interested in the Group, please forward this message. I'll be
looking for your reply!
* This tongue-in-cheek call for nominations/volunteers for the office
of Vice-Chair of the RUSA/STARS Interlibrary Loan Discussion Group is
based on the hilarious "213 Things Skippy Is No Longer Allowed To Do In
The U.S. Army;" if you can set aside a half-hour to kill yourself
laughing and don't blush at a little military profanity, link to it at
