Subject: [ILL-L] Patron self-pickup and self-checkout of ILL items
Greetings, ILL colleagues:
This subject was discussed a few weeks ago on the list, but
I'd like to revisit it. Could you all please take a look at the
following quick & dirty survey below and send me your answers to the
questions? I've tried to make this as brief as possible as I know you're
all busy.
Thanks for your
help! Patrick Padovan @ UOJ (Timberland Regional Library ILL)
1. Does your library offer your patrons self-pickup
and self-checkout of their holds? (If "No," please skip to question 5.)
Yes
2. If you answered yes to question 1, does this
include ILL items? No Barcode numbers ILL items must be keyed in by
hand and the due date has to be changed from the default due date.
3. If you answered yes to question 2, do you feel
this has been successful (ILL items checked out and returned
successfully and on time, etc)? N/A
4. If you answered no to question 3, please explain
(Increased lost and missing items, or items not returned on time, etc).
Our barcode numbers are alphanumeric. The ILLiad link (for want of a
better term) won't transform the barcode number into a barcode on our
Lending labels. And there's no way to have it automatically change
itself to the due date the lender gave us. Also, SIRSI won't 'take' the
Transaction Number Barcode we have for ILLiad as a readable barcode; it
only reads our 13 digit alphanumeric barcodes.
5. As a lender, would you have concerns about
lending materials to a borrower library if you knew they would be
putting the material in a public self-pickup and self-checkout area for
their patrons? Yes, I would. The way we look at it here is that ILL
books are not OUR books. The lending libraries lent them to us as a
courtesy. We must abide by their conditions and have it back by their
due dates. So, we have them behind the Circ desk so our staff can not
only change the due dates but also tell them when they're due and answer
any questions about ILL. We want lending libraries to keep lending to
us and- since there are some libraries we borrow from that charge $100
for a lost ILL book- it's more fiscally responsible for us to take
better care of loaned materials.
