[ILL-L] Question for libraries that loan microfilm

Interesting question. If any library out there does do physical checks, I hope they respond to the list.
We lend mostly county histories, census and thesis on film, but nowhere near the number per day that you have described. On the average we lend 10 to 15 per week. I briefly thought about manually checking the film when its returned, but with a small staff, we don't have the time, even for the small amount we lend.
We do a visual inspection before its sent out and when its returned. If the edges of the film are torn, we can see it through the "open slots" of the reel. If the film has been creased or its buckled, most likely it won't be laying flat when its rolled up on the reel. I would worry more about packaging of the film when its returned. I think its more likely that you'll have damage if its not mailed properly. We ask that the film be returned in the box provided.
If you lend 35 to 100 rolls of film per day, then for the most part, they're going to be arriving back to your library within days of each other. I can only think that your staff and/or volunteers would be spending a large amount of time doing physical checks.
Finally, I'd also think about the physical impact, if any, there would be on the film and/or your readers.

Subject: [ILL-L] Question for libraat loan microfilm
Good morning!
Here at the State library of PA we are faced with a dilemma and I would like some thoughts from other ILL folks. We have a very extensive collection of newspapers on microfilm, which we allow to circulate through ILL, usually sending out anywhere from 35-100 reels a day. In many cases we own the only known microfilm copies of these papers, and we are concerned about loss or damage. It has been suggested that we check each reel for damage upon return by putting it on a reader and scanning it from beginning to end. Do any of you who loan microfilm do any type of physical check of the film when it is returned to you? If so, how many reels per day, and how time consuming is it? I would appreciate your thoughts on this.
Thanks in advance.
