Good morning!

Here at the State library of PA we are faced with a dilemma and I would like some thoughts from other ILL folks. We have a very extensive collection of newspapers on microfilm, which we allow to circulate through ILL, usually sending out anywhere from 35-100 reels a day. In many cases we own the only known microfilm copies of these papers, and we are concerned about loss or damage. It has been suggested that we check each reel for damage upon return by putting it on a reader and scanning it from beginning to end. Do any of you who loan microfilm do any type of physical check of the film when it is returned to you? If so, how many reels per day, and how time consuming is it? I would appreciate your thoughts on this.

Thanks in advance.
