Dear Venice,

Do you use OCLC? Direct request and custom holdings refer to OCLC
capabilities.

A direct request is a patron request that is sent to OCLC and is
immediately assigned lenders based on a profile set up by the borrowing
library. It is automated and doesn't require any staff intervention. A
request sent to the review file, does require staff intervention.

Custom holdings is a method for libraries to create groups of libraries
with specific characteristics. For example, I am in WV, so when I make
book requests, I want to request from libraries in-state and bordering
WV because the mailing time is much quicker. Therefore, for requesting
books I've set up custom holdings groups named: WV, Regional LVIS
libraries, and LVIS libraries. The groups are arranged in a custom
holdings path that stipulates the order in which the libraries are added
to the request. My custom holdings path for book requests is first WV
libraries, then regional LVIS libraries, and finally LVIS libraries.
That means that books should arrive quickly because I always request
from the closest libraries first.

Hope this is what you wanted.

Hello,

This may sound a bit odd, but I am new to the world of ILL.........I
don't quite know what is meant when one says "direct request" or custom
holdings. I refer to a faxed request as a direct request. I know that
you are intending something quite different. Would you be willing to
give a quick synopsis? Thanks.

Has anyone else been having trouble with their direct request or custom
holdings? I've had problems since Friday. When I go to the Admin
module, I get Errors when trying to access my custom holdings groups.
On Friday the error happened when trying to get my Direct Request
profile to show. Anyone else?
