[ILL-L] borrowing current year materials

Our ILL management system tags requests with a copyright of this year
for cancellation. So, if it has a copyright of 2007, we can't fill the
request. Period. It's like if you had an earlier edition of (let's make
up a book title) Applied E-Mailing from 2005 and the customer wanted
the 2nd edition (2007), we couldn't fill that. Or the customer wanted
the version in Pig Latin of Smilla's Sense of Snow that was published
in 2007 and we had other editions in English and other languages we
owned published previous to this year, we couldn't fill that. In both
cases, it's a book published in 2007. And, really, Smilla's Sense of
Snow in Pig Latin would be a different a book altogether just as
Smilla's Sense of Snow in English was a different book from the original
in Danish due to the contribution and skill of the translator.

Subject: [ILL-L] borrowing current year materials
Our library's policy restricts borrowing and lending materials published
in the last 12 months. For those of you with a similar policy, how do
you treat a current translation of a previously published work? In this
instance, our patron has requested a book published in English
translation in 2007, with the orginal French publication in 1996.
Technically it's not a "new" book; yet to the owning library of the
translation it is indeed new. I'm not quite sure which way to go.
Many thanks, Susan
