[ILL-L] Question for my ILL Colleagues

Hey, Douglas!
Not in the way I think you're referring to. I compile lists of 2006 and
2007 titles from ILLiad our ILL customers have requested, look up the
ordering information, and send them to our Collection Development
department. I also run the list of books requested multiple times from
ILLiad Reports, look up the ordering information, and send them to our
Collection Development department. That one is fraught with problems I
wish that Atlas would address, since it just lists the title and doesn't
differentiate between editions, OCLC numbers, ISBNs, ISSNs, or books
with identical titles but different authors. For example, we showed a
ton of orders for a book titled Tuxedo Gin. It turned out that this was
a manga series and the volume number didn't show up in the title. The
multiple listings represented requests for different volumes of the
series by the same customer. I also run a list of our Title Not Owned
cancelled items once a month which goes to Cataloging for removal from
the database and to our subject departments for reordering. Thankfully,
I don't need to look up ordering information for that one.

I asked this question on list before when I asked about libraries that
were dumping ILL and buying the books instead. I got some e-mail
referring to ILL-for-purchase including links to some helpful studies
out there including a great PowerPoint.
If no one else onlist directs you to them, please contact me off list
and I dig through my e-mail. It'll take me a day or two. I'm back from
sick leave and running on fumes right now.

Subject: [ILL-L] Question for my ILL Colleagues

ILL Colleagues:
Does your ILL service purchase books for ILL patrons? I know of many ILL

units already doing this -- and we are very "goal minded" to convince
our acquisitions and collection development colleagues here that this is

a worthy service. We are planning to begin an ILL-for-purchase program
soon, and I am polling my ILL colleagues on this question. If you have
time only to answer, please provide institution and OCLC symbol
indicating that you are or are not offering this service; if you have
advice, I'd be delighted to hear it.
Many thanks! Douglas Hasty, FIU-Miami.
