[ILL-L] ILL and Collection Development Question

I was transferred into ILL from my gig as Main Fiction Librarian/Literature & History Senior Librarian and was allowed to serve out my term on a Fiction Collection Development committee. I had been in ILL during the saber-tooth-tiger-roaming-the-book-stacks-teletype era and -of course- much had changed. I saw that ILL provided the library with an opportunity to clean up the OCLC database of titles we no longer owned, to help identify areas where we needed to fill gaps in the collection, and to identify new titles and subjects our customers were requesting through ILL. ILLiad helps us do a lot of this- though I haven't figured out the subject area bit for our operation. When I was still on the Collection Development Committee I could see how the information that came through ILL served as a good predictor of what our customers really needed from us- both with new titles and gap-filling titles. I'm hoping that trend continued, because I put a significant amount of time into this particular job duty,

It's also important not to track just the number of times an individual title was requested, but also to look at the subject areas. It can show if there are areas in the collection that need bolstering.

Subject: [ILL-L] ILL and Collection Development Question
Hi, ILL-ers,
I was recently asked to suggest items for our library to add to the collection, based on our ILL statistics. I have not done this before, and I would appreciate any suggestions or guidance my colleagues can offer.
The idea, I understand, is that I am supposed to go through and see how many times a title has been borrowed in the last 6 months, and, based on the number of requests recommend certain titles for purchase.
If your library uses this kind of information to make collection development recommendations, I would love to know how many borrowing requests you would use as a minimum for recommending purchase.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions.
