[ILL-L] LVIS Borrowing vs. Lending

We have some consortia and state referral centers who've apparently
taken a shine to us- though we're in another corner of the country. And
we have some pay-for-loan libraries that like us too. They don't
necessarily request from nearer to home; they couldn't. I can't believe
the libraries in their neck of the woods wouldn't have copies of The
Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe or Atlas Shrugged.
The standing joke/observation around here during the winter months is
they come to us because they want a thawed out copy of the title. :>)
Save one state-Hawaii- we get requests from every state in the union;
our pet theory about why Hawaii doesn't come to us (and it can't be
because our loan period is too short (60 days)), it that their books,
like ours are thawed out. :>) again.

It would also be nice if their borrowing would be somewhat equal
to their lending. Like if they were to borrow for free 500 items in a
year, but only loan out 75, that wouldn't seem quite fair. It's not
stated in the agreement, but you would hope LVIS libraries wouldn't take
advantage of the group.
I think this is something that might be beyond one's control. I
would love to lend more, but that all depends on other libraries needing
what we have. I never refuse a request unless it can't be filled, but
it all depends on the borrowing libraries to put me on their list.
Agreed. We also have cases where we get hit CONSTANTLY by some LVIS
libraries, and we would actually borrow very few from them. The reason?
We go to our consortial lenders first - we fill about 56% of our loans
from other Cal State University Libraries, so LVIS libraries are much
further down in my custom holdings, but since we fall higher in the
alphabet (CHU), we get hit quite heavily by other LVIS libraries.
It also depends on a library's collections. We are heavy in the natural
resources and nursing, so we tend to get a lot of requests for those
type of materials, but the libraries requesting may not have as much
music, art, and psychology stuff as we need.
I've moved LVIS up in my article custom holdings, so that's helped. But
there are a variety of reasons for why you might lend way more than you
borrow from a particular LVIS library.
It's the libraries that are constant abusers of our due dates (to tie
into another thread) that come to us over and over again that tweak my
beanie a bit.
