[ILL-L] Replacement Fees and ILL

Some of us, I would assume, use a standard replacement charge no matter
what the book originally costs. For example, we charge $60 for our
replacement charge. If this is a science book - that isn't going to
cover the cost of replacement. If it's a children's book - that charge
would obviously replace several books. I am always open to those who
offer to purchase a replacement and send it to me vs paying the $60 and
while it hasn't happened a lot - we've had it happen a few times. (We
are a small operation so this may not work for large libraries or public
libraries.)
I hope that this helps.

Subject: [ILL-L] Replacement Fees and ILL
Hello,
I was just wondering what the general consensus is on replacement fees
on damaged or unreturned ILL's. My latest case is a book that I FINALLY
got back from a patron only to discover it has some pretty severe
"liquid" damage. The invoice I received from the lending library billed
us $100 for the cost of the book and a $20 processing fee. The problem
I have with this is that the price they paid for the book is written on
the inside cover ($15.50 in 1986 FYI). My question is, is it normal
practice for a library to charge 6 times the value (the 1986 value mind
you) of the book when replacing it? This is not a rare book. It is for
sale for 19.99 on Amazon. Thoughts?
