[ILL-L] CCL & CCG (Was: copyright clarification from new ILL-er)

Hello Everyone,

In the automated world of OCLC Direct Request, it's interesting to see what
OCLC's simple definition of CCL/CCG is:
http://www.oclc.org/support/documentation/firstsearch/managing/directill/def
ault.htm

Profile for CCG Copy Requests
CCG is a code provided by the Borrower that indicates the request conforms
to CONTU Guidelines.
Age of material is not older than 5

Profile for CCL Copy Requests
CCG is a code provided by the Borrower that indicates the request conforms
to U.S. Copyright Law.
Age of material is at least 5

However, if you are using CCL and CCG as tags to draw out reports to handle
copyright royalties (after the fact reporting), then it's prudent to be more
judicious about when to apply CCG (or add a value to eliminate exceptions to
reporting CCG); for instance, if you are replacing missing pages of a
journal, or borrowing something that is lost, damaged, etc.

It comes down to how in your workflow do you use the CCG/CCL values as
borrower, more than as a lender.

Best wishes,

Cyril

I can never remember which is which, so I have the following taped at the
top of my monitor:

-- Use CCL when requested material is older than five years.
-- Use CCG when requested material is five years old or less.

I'd bet the house that I got it from someone else's posting to this list
several years ago.

Julie,
As a lender you don't need to worry about the copyright issue. That is
for the borrowing library to deal with. The articles should be marked
with the proper CCG or CCL designation (after all these years I do still
get them confused) and then the borrowing library should pay copyright
on those articles.
I hope that this helps!
