[ILL-L] Wiki? Why not OCLC Pols Directory?

"People who don't go to the trouble to update the Policies Directory, aren't
going to be any more conscientious with a wiki and filling out the Policies
Directory isn't all that difficult."
That's the nice thing about the wiki though; we don't have to depend on
people updating their PD. Here's a scenario: An OCLC Library (symbol:
L00ZR) hasn't updated their PD entry in five years, it says that they loan
AV materials and that shows up in PD searches. In reality, they haven't
loaned AV for the last three years. Others who know about their current
policy could add a note or delete their symbol from the wiki list of AV
lenders.
No one is being required to use the wiki or contribute to it, it's entirely
voluntary.

I know people love the latest stuff, but I agree with the person who said
that we have the OCLC Policies Directory. People who don't go to the
trouble to update the Policies Directory, aren't going to be any more
conscientious with a wiki and filling out the Policies Directory isn't all
that difficult. I check the LVIS site every few months to add new LVIS
libraries to our customs holdings. Otherwise, the Policies Directory works
fine. I, for one, am not going to add unnecessary work to my day by
entering our information into a wiki or checking it for other institutions'
policies. The only benefit I can see to having a ILL policies wiki is to
the person who will get an article out of writing about it.

Hi,
Not only that, but the information has to be entered in a very particular
way in the policies directory in order for advanced search of lenders of
formats to work at all well. Otherwise, you have to crawl through entry by
entry. Why not compile that painfully gathered data in a place where we all
can look at it.
In my wildest dreams, we'd all be able to maintain it, too. (The joys of a
WIKI.) Then you'd just have to search it every so often looking for new
folks.
Of course, I'd like it even better if the Policies Directory was more
complete and more uniform. Then I wouldn't be spending time doing this,
believe me.

Because not everyone has their policy directory info updated.
I maintain the ArieLVIS list and it has more libraries on it than those I
find when I do a search for LVIS libraries with Ariel. That's one of the
steps I use when I update it, but it's not the only one.

Why start a Wiki? The OCLC Policies Directory is just as available on
the web as a wiki would be, and contains all these fields. "symbol,
state, charge, format loaned (which would not have to be all formats),
loan period if exceptional and any other useful bit of information that
might help someone create their own custom holdings groups. "
