[ILL-L] clarification of av wiki list

As I see it, the biggest advantage to setting up a Wiki is that we can make
it searchable the way we really need to search. If it's done right, we
could potentially be able to search for a certain lender profile (e.g., LVIS
lenders; lenders who are "always" free (LVIS or otherwise); lenders who are
free only if you lend for free; etc.).

Even more useful will be the ability to pull lists of lenders by all of the
various format-specific loan policies we have, such as: reference,
genealogy, new (< 1 year), new (< 6 mo), all AV, VHS but not DVD, all DVD
except best-sellers, CD audio books but not music CD, etc.

I would use this information to compile Custom Holdings lists of all lenders
with like policies - not to check on a request-by-request basis what a
particular lender can loan (since that information is indeed easy to find in
the Policies Directory, albeit usually in the form of unsearchable "notes"
text fields).

OCLC keeps saying they're going to improve the Policies Directory, but I
don't know whether their end result will be searchable in the way we need it
to be. (Somehow I doubt it!)

Subject: [ILL-L] clarification of av wiki list

Hi all,

Let me try to be more clear, since there seems to be some confusion.

What I'm working on, with some others, is a list of those who loan av. This
is actually harder to figure out from the OCLC Policies Directory than one
could hope it would be. I wish it was easy in the Policies Directory. Try
figuring out who loans microfilm some time. You get some very odd results
in advanced search. The Policies Directory does work very well to hunt for
LVIS members, but not for media lenders.

So, the idea is to post an av lenders list on a wiki. It's not much
different than people sharing their various lists as has been done to ILL-L
in the past. It's just that the wiki list would always be there when you
look for it and we might be able to figure out a mechanism to update it on
the wiki. Whenever one of us interested in this topic finds something out
something new, it would be great if it could be shared with others having
similar interests.

If you don't loan av, you would probably check once to make sure you weren't
on the list and then ignore the whole project. If you do borrow and loan
av, you may find it useful to consult. Perhaps eventually, OCLC will re-do
the Policy Directory and the wiki list could go away.

Lastly, I work in a public library and have no need to publish or perish.

Hope this is more understandable.
