I use a Canon CanoScan 8000F. It's one of the cheapest scanners around. It works well for home or small office (= low volume). The CanoScan software allows you to scan documents as a pdf as well as other formats.
If you were to receive a document as a tiff and your client prefers pdf, you could use the NLM's free software to convert it. You actually have the choice of using the DocMorph web server (http://docmorph.nlm.nih.gov/docmorph/docmorph.htm ) to convert it or downloading and installing the MyMorph software (http://docmorph.nlm.nih.gov/docmorph/mymorph.htm ). It all depends upon whether you want mobility or constant availability

I am looking for advice on how to go about getting the proper scanner.
Our institution does not have Ariel. One of our new physicians would
like his articles sent via e-mail rather than fax or paper. Are there
any suggestions on what type of scanner this would be? Company names?
Also, do you then need special software to convert the article into a
PDF form?
